Evgeniya Righini-Brand

I am a graphic designer in love with beautiful paper and everything geometric. With my professional workflow being mostly digital, I am always looking for an excuse to create something by hand to unwind and to find a different outlet for my creativity — and one of my obsessions is making various 3-dimensional geometric paper decorations.

I’ve always been fascinated by the fantastic sculptural forms often seen in decorative objects, architectural models, haute couture fashion garments and accessories and in packaging design — and learning how to turn a simple sheet of paper into exciting 3D geometric paper objects has been a very satisfying and eye-opening experience for me as a designer, which has provided me with another creative playground and plenty of beautiful objects to use as decor items!

What Students Say
"Great class! Concise, clear, and well organized, including many tips for the most efficient methods at each step. Those really make a difference in the more complex folds."

— Rebecca

Whether you are decorating for the festive season, party or an event, or just want to add a touch of sophistication to your everyday environment, making your own geometric paper ornaments is a great way to create an exciting, trendy and highly customisable look without breaking the bank! And you don’t have to be an origami master to be able to turn paper into fun three-dimensional shapes!

In this class, I am excited to guide you through the process and share with you detailed step-by-step instructions for creating 3 types of my favourite versatile paper ornaments, which make fantastic holiday, party and everyday decorations! Being based on foundational folding techniques, these ornaments are a perfect starting point for anyone new to structural paper folding. And they don’t require a lot of tools and materials, beyond standard size paper and a few common tools!

In this class you will learn:

  • how to choose the right paper to have a smooth folding experience and create beautiful, neat and sturdy ornaments;
  • how to prepare your paper for folding;
  • step-by-step instructions and tips for folding 3 types of ornaments;
  • how to best construct your ornaments;
  • tips for preparing your ornaments for hanging;
  • ideas for using your ornaments;
  • ideas for customising your ornaments.

To make it easier for you to create your ornaments in different sizes and using your preferred units, whether metric or imperial, I have created a few diagrams and instructions for you to use as you work through the class.

This class is designed for:

  • anyone looking for a fun & rewarding craft project;
  • DIY & craft enthusiasts;
  • papercraft artists;
  • interior & graphic designers creating decorations, shop window displays or party decor;
  • event & wedding designers;
  • party planners.

Structural paper folding is one of those skills you didn’t know you needed until you’ve learnt it! And whilst we’ll be specifically creating ornaments, getting into paper folding will make you think differently about any personal or professional projects which involves working with paper or any other foldable sheet material. So whether you are a DIY decor or papercraft enthusiast, or a graphic, interior, fashion, architecture or packaging designer or a student of these disciplines — this class is for your!

Once you have cracked the basics of this kind of paper folding, creating geometric paper ornaments can become a fun, addictive and therapeutic process, with plenty of room for experimentation with different papers, colours, sizes, shapes and customising your ornaments. And I cannot wait to see your ornaments and how you decorate with them!

What Students Say

"I loved the whole aesthetic of this class, from the graphic design of the chapter headings and provided pattern templates to the excellent, clear photography. From the beautiful simple forms of the ornaments themselves that matched the clarity and precision of the instructions. The class is well structured and very easy to follow.

Obviously a lot of thought has gone into the making of it and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in creating this kind of origami for some original Christmas ornaments or home decorations."

— Elspeth

"Simple to follow instructions. The resources provided could not make it any easier. I look forward to making more to decorate all around the house."

— Shaunn

"At first, I was not so sure if I will be able to create all ornaments, but in the end I did all three projects in one evening and I'm so happy with the results! The ornaments look amazing and once you get in the technique it's kind of addictive. As Evgeniya says in the videos: the tricky part are the first three folds, then it's quite easy.

I would highly recommend this class to all paperlovers out there!"

— Anna

FAQs

Do I need any previous skills or experience to take this class?

No previous paper-folding or origami experience is required to take this class, but some patience, persistence and precision when following the step-by-step instructions are highly recommended, especially when you are just getting started!

Do I need any specialist tools and materials to create these ornaments?

You'll need a few tools, but most of them are quite common items (see the list above), and there are a few household alternatives you can use instead of some of them. You'll also need to use some foldable heavyweight paper (not light origami paper) or lightweight card, but you can easily use common 100–135 gsm drawing or cartridge paper to get you started!

Can I create these ornaments with my kids or friends?

Creating paper ornaments is a great activity for entertaining your guests, friends and family! But I would recommend preparing the paper — cutting paper, adding marks and crease lines — for folding first (especially if you are planning to do this activity with kids), so people can enjoy the quick and exciting folding process and not get bogged down with the precise preparation steps!

I've created the first type of these ornaments with my niece (13 yo) and nephew (8 yo), and they had no trouble folding them, but I marked and added the crease lines for them beforehand.

How long does it take to create these ornaments?

Once you have learnt all of the techniques, you'll be able to create your ornaments relatively quickly. But different types of ornaments and different sizes will require different amount of time, particularly in the preparation stages. Creating ornaments from scratch can take between 10 minutes for the first small ornaments to up to an hour for the large third type of ornaments.

How durable are these ornaments?

If you don't use flimsy paper, these ornaments can be really durable and can withstand the attacks from furry family members!:D We've had a few of these ornaments hanging around the house as decorations for several years, and apart from needing to be occasionally dusted, they are still as good as new!
