MEET YOUR TEACHER

Dominic Righini-Brand

I’m a professional photographer, designer and teacher passionate about film photography and recreating filmic looks in my digital photographs.

Photographic editing is an important part of the creative workflow, and it can be used to create powerful photographic works and convey a specific narrative.

Getting a desirable look is about using all of the available tools to their full potential, but to do that you need to understand what each of the tools does, how it differs from other tools and how it can be combined with other tools to enhance the look.

In this course, you’ll learn how to get the most of Adobe Lightroom tools to enhance your colour edits and fine-tune the look to perfection by developing your understanding of when and how you can use various Adobe Lightroom tools for working with colours and tones.

What Students Say
"This class helped me understand the workflow of photo editing, the individual sliders' purpose, and how they can all work together. Definitely recommend it!"

— Dorrian

Taking great photographs is only half the story — how you edit your photographs can mean the difference between a good photograph and a great one! Unedited and raw digital photographs lack soul, and working with the colours and tones helps to add personality and character, and create exciting and diverse photo edits that speak!

The range of colour editing tools available in Adobe Lightroom Classic can be a little overwhelming, but learning what each of the tools does, how it differs from other tools and how it can be combined with other tools to enhance a look can make your editing much more versatile and will help you produce more considered and aesthetically pleasing edits, helping your images tell a story!

In this class, I will be sharing with you my special tips, techniques & workflows for getting the most out of Adobe Lightroom Classic tools for enhancing colour edits of raw photographs.

Through the
structured approach I’ll be sharing in this class and looking at the different tools available, their uses and their place in the editing workflow, you will be able to:

  • enhance your understanding of when and how you can use various tools for working with colours and tones,
  • better integrate them into your workflow,
  • and effectively combine these tools to create exciting and varied edits.

In this class, I will cover:

  • Making quick changes to enhance your edits using Profiles;
  • Developing the base for your photo edits with Tonal Recovery;
  • Enhancing tonal depth & contrast using Parametric, Point and Colour Channel Curves;
  • Making initial colour adjustments using Calibration;
  • Understanding the new Colour Grading tools;
  • Harmonising colours & setting the mood with Colour Grading tools;
  • Finalising your colour look with HSL Adjustments;
  • Enhancing your edits with local adjustments using Masks.

In this class, we will be working with RAW photographs because images captured in RAW have more information saved in the file, increasing versatility and the range of stuff you can do when editing. Technically you can use the same techniques when editing positive image formats, like TIFF and JPEGs, but there will be some limitations based on the actual information stored in the image.

Recommended Previous Knowledge & Experience

This class is designed for intermediate and advanced level students. To get the most out of this class you will need a reasonable understanding of photographic terminology and basic photo correction and editing tools and techniques, and have previous experience of editing photographs in Adobe Lightroom Classic or Adobe Camera Raw.

Software

For the best experience possible you’ll need a Creative Cloud version of Adobe Lightroom Classic (11.3 release or newer) or Adobe Camera Raw (14.3 release or newer). You can download the latest trial version of the Adobe Creative Cloud Photography suite from adobe.com.

For demonstration, I will be using Adobe Lightroom Classic, but you will be able to follow along in Adobe Camera RAW, because it has exactly the same tools.

If you are using Adobe Lightroom — on a tablet, smartphone or computer— you will also be able to follow along for most of this class, however, techniques which involve working with Calibration are currently unavailable in Lightroom.

What Students Say

"I highly recommend this class! I watched a lot of tutorials and classes about photo editing and this is one of my favorites! The class is so insightful and profound. This is actually what I have been looking for, I had so many questions and doubts with photo editing and almost all got answered in this class. I can't wait to apply what I learned. I have a good feeling that my learnings from this class will level up my photography and will enable me to deliver high quality photographs to my clients."

— Rose

"Hands down one of the best in-depth tutorials on Lightroom."

— Sander

"Not just a basic "this is how you move sliders here and there; to the left and to the right". The profound explanation how the sliders affect the photograph is something I was looking for (very difficult to find). However, I believe viewers should have some good understanding of Lightroom features to grasp the whole idea of this course. 10/10"

— Jan

"Really well organised lessons with great content. Your clarity of instruction is engaging with good examples and easy to follow tutorials."

— Mick

FAQs

Is it a step-by-step tutorial on how to edit a specific photograph and give it a certain look?

No, it is not. Whilst I will be showing a few examples of how to achieve certain looks (as a demonstration of how the different tools work), this class is intended to help you enhance your understanding of colour editing tools and techniques, how they affect your photographs and can be combined together. Having completed this class, you will be able to apply these techniques to any of your photographs to create your own looks and special edits.

What software do I need to follow this class?

For the best experience and to get access to all of the tools covered in this class, you’ll need Adobe Lightroom Classic (11.3 release or newer) or Adobe Camera Raw (14.3 release or newer).

You will also be able to follow along for most of this class (minus the techniques which involve working with the Calibration panel) using Adobe Lightroom on a tablet, smartphone or computer.

I use Adobe Lightroom on my phone only, will I find this class helpful?

Yes, as long as you know where to find all of the relevant tools in the mobile interface, which is different from the desktop version.

You will be able to use most of the tools and techniques covered, apart from Calibration which is currently not supported by mobile versions of Adobe Lightroom.

What photographs can I edit using the techniques from this class?

Technically you can use the techniques covered in this class to edit any colour photographs, but for the best results I would recommend shooting and editing RAW photographs because images captured in RAW formats (even if it is RAW photograph shot on your smartphone) have more information available, increasing their versatility and the range of stuff you can do to them when editing.

Do I need any previous skills or experience to take this class?

To get the most out of this class you will need a reasonable understanding of photographic terminology and basic photo correction and editing tools and techniques. This class is designed for intermediate and advanced level students who have previous experience of editing photographs in Adobe Lightroom Classic or Adobe Camera Raw.
